Definition
Account planning is the structured process of analyzing a strategic customer or prospect account and building a coordinated strategy to win, retain, and expand it. An account plan maps the buying stakeholders, business priorities, competitors in play, and whitespace: products or business units the account doesn't buy yet.
Account plans usually set time-bound objectives, such as growing annual recurring revenue (ARR) from the account, and teams review them quarterly. Account planning sits inside broader sales planning. Territory and quota decisions set the targets, and account plans show how each strategic account will contribute to them.
For finance and planning teams, account plans are a forecasting input. Expansion and renewal assumptions shape net revenue retention (NRR) and pipeline coverage, while long-term account value ties back to customer lifetime value (CLV / LTV). Connecting account plans to the company plan builds revenue forecasts from account-level evidence instead of top-down growth rates, which makes them more reliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between account planning and territory planning?
Territory planning divides accounts, regions, or segments among sellers to balance coverage and revenue potential. Account planning works one level down, setting the strategy and revenue objectives for a single account within a territory.
What does an account plan include?
An account plan covers the account's stakeholders, business priorities, competitors, whitespace, and time-bound revenue objectives such as ARR growth. It also assigns the actions and owners needed to reach those objectives.
How often should you update an account plan?
Review account plans at least quarterly so they stay in step with forecast and quota cycles. Update them sooner when the account changes, such as a new executive sponsor or a renewal at risk.
