Definition

Agentic planning is the use of AI agents to break a planning goal into steps and run them across connected planning data and models. The agents adapt when conditions change mid-task, then hand their outputs to people for review and approval. It's the application of agentic AI to business planning.

In FP&A, an agent might ingest new actuals, re-run the forecast on updated assumptions, flag material variances, and send changes to an analyst for sign-off. That makes agentic planning a natural fit for continuous planning, where forecasts update as new data arrives instead of waiting for the next planning cycle.

The main difference from AI-assisted planning is initiative: an assistant responds to a single request, while an agent pursues a goal across several steps. Agents work within defined boundaries, such as approved tools, data permissions, and stopping rules. Finance teams keep ownership of the decision, and agentic planning supports decision intelligence by giving them up-to-date analysis to act on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between agentic planning and AI-assisted planning?

AI-assisted planning uses AI to help with individual tasks a person starts, such as answering a data question or drafting a forecast. Agentic planning gives AI agents a goal to pursue across multiple steps, with people reviewing the results.

How is agentic planning different from standard planning automation?

Standard automation follows fixed rules and predefined workflows. Agentic planning lets agents choose the steps toward a goal and adjust them when data or assumptions change.

Do humans stay in control in agentic planning?

Yes, agents act within boundaries that people set, such as tool access, data permissions, and stopping rules. People review and approve agent outputs before they change the plan.
