Definition
AI forecasting is the use of artificial intelligence across the forecasting process to produce and update forecasts of revenue, expenses, cash flow, and demand. Statistical and machine learning models read historical and current data, such as actuals, pipeline, drivers, and external signals, to generate a baseline forecast. The forecast then updates as new actuals arrive.
The term covers predictive forecasting techniques and the machine learning in FP&A behind them. It also includes AI that explains variances and agents that run recurring forecast cycles. Basic automation is different: it speeds up existing tasks but doesn't generate the forecast.
For business planning, AI gives you a data-driven baseline across many SKUs, entities, or cost centers at once. That scale keeps rolling forecasts manageable every period. It works best with clean data, clear drivers, and planners who review the output, add business context, and track forecast accuracy.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between AI forecasting and predictive forecasting?
Predictive forecasting is one technique within AI forecasting: it projects future values from historical patterns using statistical or machine learning models. AI forecasting applies AI to the whole process, including baseline generation, updates with new actuals, variance explanations, and forecast agents.
What data does AI forecasting need?
It needs clean historical actuals at the level you forecast, plus the drivers behind them, such as pipeline, headcount, pricing, or volumes. External signals such as seasonality or market indicators help when they have a clear link to the line being forecast.
Does AI forecasting replace FP&A analysts?
No. AI produces the baseline and handles the volume, while FP&A analysts review it, add business context the data doesn't capture, and own the final forecast.
