Definition

AI orchestration is the coordination of multiple AI models, agents, and tools so they work as one governed system. It also covers the data sources and human checkpoints needed to complete multi-step workflows. An orchestration layer breaks a goal into subtasks, routes each one to the right agent or tool, and manages the shared context between them.

In business planning, orchestration extends AI-assisted planning from single tasks to complete planning workflows. A month-end cycle is a typical example: one agent pulls actuals, another refreshes the forecast, a third runs variance analysis, and a fourth drafts commentary. Finance reviews and approves the output before it's shared.

AI orchestration is different from agentic AI, which describes individual agents that reason and act toward a goal. Orchestration is the layer that sequences several agents, enforces permissions and guardrails, and escalates decisions to people. It works best in a connected planning environment, where every agent reads from the same data and business logic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AI orchestration and agentic AI?

Agentic AI refers to AI agents that can reason, plan, and act toward a goal with limited supervision. AI orchestration is the coordination layer that sequences several of these agents and tools so they complete a larger workflow together.

How is AI orchestration different from workflow automation?

Workflow automation runs fixed, predefined steps without reasoning about the results. AI orchestration lets agents choose how to handle each subtask and escalate to a person when a decision falls outside their permissions.

How is AI orchestration used in FP&A?

In FP&A, orchestration coordinates agents across recurring work such as pulling actuals, refreshing forecasts, running variance analysis, and drafting commentary. Finance teams stay in the loop at defined approval points and sign off on outputs before they're published.
