Definition

AI safety is the discipline of making sure AI systems behave as intended and stay under human control throughout their lifecycle. It covers how well a model handles bad or unexpected inputs, whether people can explain its outputs, and how teams monitor and correct it.

In enterprise planning, AI safety takes the form of guardrails. Typical controls include least-privilege access and human approval before high-impact actions, such as submitting a forecast. Teams also set confidence thresholds that send uncertain outputs to a reviewer and keep an audit trail of every action the AI takes.

These controls matter more as agentic AI moves from suggesting changes to executing them. In AI-assisted planning, drafting variance commentary for review carries less risk than updating driver assumptions in a live model. Regulation applies too: the EU AI Act requires high-risk AI systems to be designed for effective human oversight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between AI safety and AI governance?

AI governance is the broader set of policies, roles, and accountability for how an organization uses AI, often built on its data governance framework. AI safety is the set of controls that put those policies into practice, such as permissions, approval steps, and monitoring.

How do finance teams apply AI safety to AI agents in planning?

Finance teams give agents only the access they need and require human sign-off before an agent changes budgets, forecasts, or reported figures. They also review logs of agent activity during close and planning cycles to catch errors early.

Why does AI safety matter for financial data and compliance?

Financial plans and reports feed board materials, regulatory filings, and day-to-day decisions, so an unchecked AI error can spread quickly and be hard to trace. Safety controls keep a named person accountable for each change and leave a record auditors can review.
