Definition

Planning agents are AI agents built for business planning and FP&A. Given a goal, they monitor planning data for signals, reason across forecasts, variances, and scenarios, then act on what they find. Typical actions include updating forecasts, running what-if scenarios, explaining variances, and drafting commentary for a person to review before the plan changes.

Planning agents apply agentic AI to the planning cycle. Workflow automation runs a fixed sequence of steps, while a planning agent decides which steps a goal requires. A standalone AI chat tool can answer questions, but it can't act on governed planning data.

For finance teams, planning agents make continuous planning practical because the plan updates as conditions change. For example, if regional revenue declines, an agent can simulate pricing options and propose a revised forecast for FP&A to approve. They take AI-assisted planning further and put augmented planning into practice: agents handle repeatable analysis, and planners own assumptions and decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between planning agents and agentic AI?

Agentic AI is the broad category of AI systems that pursue goals by planning and taking actions with limited human input. Planning agents are agentic AI applied to business planning, working on forecasts, budgets, scenarios, and variances.

How do planning agents differ from AI-assisted planning?

In AI-assisted planning, AI typically suggests forecasts or answers questions while people do the work. Planning agents complete multistep tasks themselves, such as updating a forecast model after business conditions change, and return the result for review.

What tasks do planning agents handle in FP&A?

They handle recurring analysis and model work, including variance explanations, forecast updates, what-if scenarios, and draft commentary for management reporting. Planners keep ownership of assumptions, judgment calls, and final decisions.

How do people stay in control of planning agents?

People set the goal, decide what data and models the agent can access, and approve its output before it changes the plan. Traceability lets reviewers see which data and logic the agent used.
