Multinational ride-sharing, delivery, micromobility app Bolt operates a complex business, with presence in 70+ countries and more than 800 cities.

Before Pigment, their existing business planning platform struggled with the complexity of Bolt’s requirements, usage of previous generation planning platform, with modeling and reporting both causing enough friction that the finance team frequently reverted to using Google Sheets instead.

Bolt’s success criteria for a new planning & reporting platform were simple:

  1. Improve speed and performance for planning and reporting, making process interactive for end users
  2. High adoption rate, and a wide pool of regular users
  3. The tool should be leveraged across all planning workflows - with no spreadsheet fallbacks

After an impressive demo and small proof of concept, Bolt decided to implement Pigment.

“Presales did an amazing job - they tailored the presentation to our company. When we were testing performance on the demo, we asked to process 30 million transactions - and it actually worked. There was no special preparation, nothing. We gave the data, and it worked right out of the box. ”

Driving adoption right from the start

Following implementation with Pigment partner Viridian, adoption amongst FP&A team and the wider Pigment user base was impressive.

Today, Bolt uses Pigment for business margin and performance, workforce planning, OpEx planning, and P&L reporting - use cases which touch nearly 500 Pigment users in roles ranging from FP&A and HR to departmental budget owners and management.

“When you have an EPM system that’s not trusted by the organization, then there is low engagement, which means low quality inputs, and low quality outputs. With Pigment, we managed to gain trust pretty fast, because data is readily available, it’s user friendly, and you see the results fast. We have 800 metrics already in our model, which will continue to grow. ”

These users are all able to collaborate on plans, all at the same time, without causing issues:

  • Cell-level commenting means discussion can happen within the tool, making discussions timely and productive.
  • Workflows and notifications keep processes moving.
  • Fine-grain access controls mean that a wide array of users can interact with the tool, without seeing or changing anything they shouldn’t.

Into the fast lane

For Mikhail’s team, the difference between Pigment and the old system is night and day:

  • The response time of the old system is dramatically lower, which means the planning process is interactive and reporting is far more efficient. Users enjoy working in Pigment rather than finding it a chore.
  • When leadership requires changes, business users can make adjustments on the fly.
  • Head of verticals and regions have autonomy and ownership over their own P&Ls.
  • Google Sheets use has fallen off a cliff.
“I’d estimate we’re at least 10 times more efficient during the planning process. We’re not just waiting and hoping that the system will operate. We actually interact with the system, and spend more time understanding our plans, understanding business constraints, and optimizing the plans.”

What’s next?

Work to date has focussed on replicating the use cases handled by the legacy tool in place beforehand. But Mikhail’s team, sold on the benefits Pigment can bring, are now exploring new use cases, including:

  • Cashflow and balance sheet
  • Strategic 5-year planning
  • ESG

As immediate next steps, Mikhail aims to leverage Pigment’s AI capabilities, starting with AI Insights to support deeper variance analysis and the production of more sophisticated reports, and later using AI Agents, including the AI Analyst and Modeling Agent, to further support their business needs, which he’s particularly excited about.
